The electric pickup segment is one of the fastest-growing, most competitive spaces in the automotive industry today. The F-150 Lightning has led the pack for the past few years, selling out quickly at Asheville-area dealerships—but is its reign about to end with the release of the all-new 2024 Silverado EV? We’ll find out when the latter goes on sale later this year, but we’re putting our money on the newcomer—compared to the F-150 Lightning, the Silverado EV offers a longer range and double the towing capacity! Get the details in a head-to-head 2024 Chevy Silverado EV vs. Ford F-150 Lightning comparison from Sunshine Chevrolet, LLC, below.
Shoppers in the electric truck segment have unique needs. Not only must these vehicles run on 100% electric power, but they must match—and hopefully outperform—their gas-powered progenitors. Before we get into the detailed specs, let’s take a look at how these electric trucks compare in a couple of critical areas:
Both trucks employ batteries to power electric motors: the Silverado EV uses General Motors’ Ultium platform, a game-changing EV platform built on a flexible battery architecture. On the F-150, two lithium-ion battery options are offered; a 98.0-kWh Standard Range pack and a 131.0-kWh Extended Range pack.
Hendersonville-area buyers should note the difference between the Chevy Silverado EV and Ford F-150 Lightning drivetrain, however. The F-150 Lightning can be optioned with an AWD system, which sends power to both axles independently. The Silverado EV offers something a little different: electronically controlled four-wheel drive, powered by motors on the front and rear axles. The “e4WD” system sends power to each of the four wheels independently for optimal traction and safety on slick roads and difficult terrain.
After electric range, the biggest concern for electric truck buyers is going to be capability. What’s the difference between the Chevy Silverado EV and Ford F-150 Lightning when it comes to towing and hauling? Quite a bit, as you can see from the specs below:
