How Long Do Tires Last?

Row of tires

Most new tires produced by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), and even high-quality replacement tires, can be expected to last around 50,000 miles. Find out more about what impacts tire life expectancy with Sunshine Chevrolet, LLC, then contact our Asheville-area service center if you have any additional questions.

Factors That Affect Tire Life Expectancy

We’re often asked by Hendersonville and Fletcher drivers, “how many miles do tires last,” and “how many miles should tires last?” It’s important to keep in mind that there are many factors at play that impact the answers to these questions, such as:

  • Tire Type: While high-performance tires have extra grip on Arden roads, they may deteriorate faster than all-season tires that have less resistance.
  • Conditions of Roads: If you regularly drive on gravel or dirt roads, or you often encounter construction and varying weather conditions like snow, rain, and ice, this will heavily impact your tires. If you intend on using your vehicle for off-roading, this will wear out your tires as well.
  • Treadwear Rating: Your tires come with a treadwear rating that rates the life expectancy of your tire treads. You can find the treadwear rating engraved on the side of the tires.
  • Drivetrain: AWD, RWD, and FWD vehicle tires all wear differently because of where the engine power for forwarding motion ends up.
  • Terrain: If live in an area with a lot of slopes and inclines, your tires will likely require more friction in order to start and stop.
  • Driving Habits: Do you have a heavy foot when pressing on the gas and brakes? This will wear out your tires faster than gradually accelerating and coasting.

Tips for Maintaining Your Tires for the Long Haul

In addition to being more aware of your driving habits, here are a few things you can do to prolong the life of your tires:

  • Take your vehicle for regularly scheduled maintenance.
  • When stopping at the gas station, quickly check for proper air pressure.
  • Regularly inspect tire tread depth for tire tread wear.
  • Rotate your tires on a regular basis for more even distribution of tire wear.
