How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Mechanic with Tires

How often should you rotate your tires? That’s a question commonly asked by our Asheville customers and commonly answered by our Sunshine Chevrolet, LLC service experts! We recommend a tire rotation interval of about 5,000 – 7,000 miles. Despite this being a good general rule, for exact figures on when to rotate tires for your specific model, you should always check your owner’s manual.

When to Rotate Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

Curious about what FWD and RWD are abbreviations for? These abbreviations simply refer to front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, or where the power from the engine is directed to. For a rear-wheel-drive car, the power is sent to the rear tires, while in a front-wheel-drive car it is sent to the front tires. The set of tires getting the majority of the engine power will wear out faster than the others. Which type of vehicle you own will determine how many miles to rotate tires:

  • Remember to Regularly Rotate Tires: For FWD or RWD cars, tire rotation needs to be performed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual for exact figures.
  • Vehicle Usage: Keep in mind that the type of driving you do, like off-roading, will affect how often you need to rotate your tires. Talk with the service experts at Sunshine Chevrolet, LLC to get a better idea of a maintenance schedule that fits your driving habits.
  • Flip Sides on FWD: If you’re performing an FWD tire rotation yourself, keep in mind to flip sides when moving the rear tires. For example, the rear right tire will go on the front left. However, when moving the front tires to the back, keep them on the same side.
  • Reverse for RWD: When rotating tires on an RWD car, invert the process above. Flip sides when moving the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when moving them forward.

The Importance of Rotating Your Tires

You now have a better understanding of how often you should rotate your tires, but it’s also important to know why you need to rotate them. One of the best reasons to rotate your tires is because it extends their lifespan significantly. However, there are numerous other advantages to regular tire rotations, such as:

  • Relieves Unnecessary Stress on the Drivetrain
  • Less Noise on the Road
  • Improved Traction on Slippery Roads
