Service Technician changing the oil on a vehicle

Our certified service technicians offer a vast array of high-quality maintenance repairs and educated automotive advice to car owners throughout the Arden region. One of the most common questions asked by local drivers is, “What is the difference between synthetic vs. conventional oil?” Read on below to learn more about what distinguishes conventional oil from synthetic oil, and the pros and cons of full synthetic oil vs. synthetic blends!

What is Regular (Conventional) Oil?

Conventional, or regular oil, is a petroleum-based lubricant that’s been commonly used in combustion engines for decades to maintain the functionality of a vehicle’s internal parts and reduce engine damage. Along with its lubricating properties, conventional motor oil also helps to reduce excessive heat buildup.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Although synthetic oil is still a byproduct of petroleum, it’s a more stable substance and provides lubrication properties that exceed that of conventional oil. Synthetic oils are also better at retaining protective properties, and oxidize less easily than regular. Other benefits of synthetic oils include:

  • Better protection of critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)
  • Improved engine cleaning properties
  • Less viscous at lower temperatures

Full Synthetic Oil vs. Synthetic Blends

Hendersonville drivers have the option of choosing between synthetic oils, conventional oils, or synthetic blends. The latter offers an affordable alternative to full synthetic oil, while still providing the improved properties that are missing from regular conventional oil.

Keep in mind that some vehicles only accept synthetic oils though! Make sure to check your owner’s manual or contact us at Sunshine Chevrolet, LLC if you’re uncertain about which kind of oil your car requires.
